History
The 8000 series is a type of commuter train, forming four or six coaches. It is also Odakyu's oldest rolling stock, and the last one with iconic ivory and blue livery. It was introduced to various passenger trains from express to stopping services, but not compatible with through-service towards Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. Traction and braking systems were better than its predecessors, though motors and traction was later replaced with even more environmentally-friendly one when refurbished.
The trains can form ten coaches with other rolling stock such as 1000 series and 3000 series. The 8000 series were also used on Hakone Tozan Line between Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto until 2008.
Withdrawal commenced in 2020, but surprisingly, Seibu decided to purchase a few units and reintroduce them, to replace 2000 series on Kokubunji Line. The first unit entered into service in 2025, and Seibu envisages that these secondhand trains could run for ten more years.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The Odakyu 8000 series is widely used on the entire Odakyu network, but gradually replaced with 5000 series (Ⅱ) since 2020. Still considerable number of trainsets are in service, but they could be withdrawn in the late-2020s.
The Seibu 8000 series is mostly used on Kokubunji Line. Seven six-carriage units are due to be reintroduced by 2029.
Photos
Seibu 8000 series looks very different to the original Odakyu one, but anyone got inside will certainly conclude it largely unchanged before the reintroduction.
