History

The 1000 series is a type of commuter train, and it is Odakyu's first train made of stainless-steel body. It was initially introduced to not only Odakyu lines services but also through-services to Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line (which were superseded by 4000 series in 2010). Each unit initially consisted of four, six, eight or ten coaches, and could be formed of up to ten coaches with other older commuter trains. In 1990-92, Odakyu introduced more 1000 series units with wider doors, but they were not successful and later confined to stopping services on branch lines and Odawara area. Four four-car units for Hakone Tozan Line (between Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto) were repainted red in 2009.

Odakyu refurbished the 1000 series in 2014-22, but the company found that it would not be wise to renovate all units. Nearly 100 carriages, many of which were wider-door ones, have been disposed of.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 1000 series is used on the entire Odakyu lines including Rapid Express services. Each unit is now formed of four or ten coaches. The red trains and wider-door units have been withdrawn by 2022, but others are likely to be operational until the early-2030s.

A red unit for Hakone Tozan Line ran the main line network towards Shinjuku in August 2020 as a part of a campaign.

Each "wider door" was two metres wide, but the door just behing the cab was 1.5 metres (still larger than ordinary doors, which are 1.3 metres).
