History
The 4000 series is a ten-carriage commuter train type and mainly used on through-services towards Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. There was another "4000 series" commuter train in 1966-2005, but it was completely a different type. The incumbent 4000 series is based on JR East E233 series, to reduce costs and to be easier for drivers to deal with. Since 2016, the through-service has been extended to Toride on JR Joban Line.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 4000 series are mainly used on through-services towards Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. They also run JR Joban Line, but not frequently. On Odakyu lines, they are mostly used on Express and Rapid Express services, as some small stations have short platforms.
