History
The 3000 series is a commuter train type, and Odakyu's most numerous train. It should be noted that "Romancecar 3000 series SE" (in service: 1958-92) is completely a different train, though they share the same name.
It was developed as less costly, environmentally friendly and accessible commuter train, replacing several old trains. There were six and eight-carriage units at first, but Odakyu ordered intermediate carriages in 2010-20 and inserted them to some six-car units, making them ten-car units. Those introduced in 2001 have wider doors than others.
They can run Hakone Tozan Line (between Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto), but not the underground. However, they have not been used for Hakone Tozan Line services since 2008.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 3000 series are widely used on the entire Odakyu network, but not on through-service towards Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. Six-car units of the 3000 series can couple with other commuter trains such as 1000 series and 8000 series, though not common in these days.
A refurbishment programme has been taken place since 2022.
