History
The 821 series was introduced to replace 415 series in Fukuoka and Kumamoto areas. The 821 series is based on 817 series, but the 821s are more energy-saving and reliable than the 817s. Each unit is formed of three coaches with longitudinal seating, and can be joined to 811 series, 813 series and the 817 series. The 821 series is compatible with driver-only operation.
There are small decorative lights at the periphery of the front end, which can emit either white or red lights. However, these lights have been turned off since 2021 due to costs and complaints about the "obnoxious features".
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 821 series is used on Chikuho Main and Sasaguri Lines (so called Fukuhoku-Yutaka Line) as well as Kagoshima Main and Hohi Main Lines (Kumamoto area), sometimes coupled with older trains aforementioned.
