History
The 10000 series was the first train introduced by Tokyo Metro, which was privatised in 2004. 36 ten-carriage units were delivered to the Yurakucho Line replacing all 07 series and some 7000 series, as well as to the Fukutoshin Line when it was opened in 2008.
The exterior was designed mainly by Alexander Neumeister, a German industrial designer. The front end resembles a glass ball, while tail lamps are keyhole-shaped. Accommodation is full of fire-retardant materials and those do not emit toxic fumes in case of fire, as the company learned a lesson from an arson attack on Daegu subway in 2003 that killed 192 people.
Each 10000 series unit consists of ten coaches, but some of them are sometimes formed of eight when there is a shortage of other eight-car units. The first four unit had tiny gold bands, though they were erased by 2026.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 10000 series trains are used on the Fukutoshin and Yurakucho Lines, including through-services towards the Seibu Ikebukuro, Tobu Tojo, Tokyu Toyoko and Minatomirai Lines.
Tokyu has launched another through-service in 2023 (to and from Sotetsu lines), but the 10000 series cannot run Sotetsu tracks, and does not run the Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line except in case of severe train disruption.
