Sotetsu 13000 series

History

The 13000 series was developed for services only on the Sotetsu network, replacing 8000 series and 9000 series. The 13000 series is based on 12000 series, but the front end looks slightly different. Each 13000 series unit is formed of eight coaches. Unlike the 12000 series and 20000 series, the 13000 series is cannot be used for through-service towards the JR or Tokyu networks.

Train operators in Japan have been struggling with labour shortage, and thus many companies have implemented or been planning to introduce driver-only operation (DOO). Sotetsu is no exception, and therefore the 13000 series units can be easily converted to be compatible with the DOO.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

One unit is operational on the Sotetsu Main Line and the Izumino Line (i.e. between Yokohama and Ebina or Shonandai). More units are to be delivered in due course.

In addition, a front coach will be displayed at the venue of World Horticultural Exhibition YOKOHAMA 2027, a garden festival.
