History

The 12000 series was developed for through-services towards Shinjuku via JR Saikyo Line. Traction, motors, braking systems and cabs are based on JR East E233 series (commuter-train group), allowing JR crews to handle the 12000 series without troubles. However, their accommodation and exterior are distinctive, successfully promoting Sotetsu in the capital (where the company is not well-known).

They mainly run between Ebina and Shinjuku, but also run towards Shinagawa or Yokohama stations (JR) in case of service disruption.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 12000 series trains are used on the entire Sotetsu network, but mainly for through-services towards Shinjuku. There are limited services to and from Ikebukuro, but do not run the other part of JR Saikyo, Kawagoe nor TWR Rinkai Lines. They are not used for through-services towards Tokyu Meguro and Toyoko Lines either.

The company noted in its long-term plan that they would look for a new through-service using the 12000 series in future, as the Sotetsu-JR route has been attracting a lower number of passengers than anticipated.
