History

The 5000 series (I), hereinafter simply referred to as the 5000 series, was a commuter train type. It was remarkable rolling stock in Odakyu's history as it was one of the first trains to be painted ivory with blue bands, and the last train with distinctive front end design dating back to 1900 series (in service: 1949-76).

At first, four-carriage units were introduced to express services. From 1978, six-car units with slight modifications of design were delivered, and they were sometimes called 5200 subseries. Some of them were shortened to four coaches in the mid-2000s.

The last iconic train had been widely used across the network, but not for through-service to Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line. They could form ten coaches with other types such as 1000 series and even 3000 series. All units retired by 2012.

The 5200 subseries had different side windows. Those refurbished after 2000 lit both lights.
