History

The 5000 series was introduced to the Daiyuzan Line. It is based on 3000 series, but the 5000 series is smaller than the 3000 series due to strict clearance requirements. There are seven three-carriage units, and only bodies of the first unit are made of carbon steel, while others are made of stainless steel.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 5000 series is used on the Daiyuzan Line. Major maintenance of the 5000 series is carried out at Daiba maintenance depot on the Sunzu Line. In that case, it is hauled by KoDe 165, locomotives of JR Freight and Class ED31 between Daiyuzan and Daiba via Odawara and Mishima.

The first unit has been painted beige and dark orange since 2016, just like Seibu trains in the 1960s.
