History

The 3000 series was introduced to Sunzu Line. At that time, there were ex-Seibu trains (a parent company of Izuhakone Railway) and those resold by Japanese National Railways. They were obsolete and too small, as they dated back to the 1930s. The company therefore decided to replace them with brand new trains.

The 3000 series was the first train to have air-conditioning on Izuhakone Railway network. Each unit consists of three coaches with transverse seating and three sets of doors per carriage. Bodies of those introduced after 1987 are made of stainless steel so that they look different from older units. As through-service-project using 7000 series has been unsuccessful, the company ordered another unit in 1997.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 3000 series is used for stopping services on Sunzu Line. Most units are covered with advertisements, some of which are eccentric.
