History

The KoDe 165 is part of Izuhakone Railway MoHa 151 series family. This article focuses on the KoDe 165, as other carriages were withdrawn by 1996.

The MoHa 151 series family consisted of ex-Japanese National Railways trains, to be specific, 30 series and 50 series of Japanese Government Railways introduced in 1926-43. 21 carriages were reallocated to Daiyuzan Line from JNR, Seibu and Sotetsu as second-hand or third-hand trains in 1947-76. They were replaced with 5000 series by 1996.

The KoDe 165 was originally MoHa 30166 (JGR 30 series), first introduced to Keihin Line (now Keihin-Tohoku Line). It was resold to Sotetsu and renamed 2000 series in 1960, and resold again to Izuhakone Railway sixteen years later. It was withdrawn from passenger service in 1996, and became quasi-locomotive unit in the following year. It had been painted yellow until 2018, but now dark brown.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The KoDe 165 engages in ad hoc engineering work. In addition, it hauls 5000 series between Daiyuzan and Odawara when its major overhaul is taken place.
