History

The 315 series is the train type that JR Central classified as a commuter train, not suburban train. Four or eight-carriage units have been introduced to Chuo Main, Kansai Main, Tokaido Main and Taketoyo Lines, replacing 211 series, 213 series and 311 series.

While the 315 series is mostly identical to other commuter trains in the Greater Tokyo Area, each unit has an accessible toilet and can run at a speed of 130 km/h (81 mph), making it compatible with long-distance regional services. A 315 series unit can also be attached to 313 series unit.

Eight-car units were introduced to Chuo Main Line in 2022, and four-car units (compatible with driver-only operation) followed soon after. Some Kansai Main Line services have also been provided the 315 series since 2023. The series was introduced to Tokaido Main Line including Shizuoka area as well as Taketoyo Line in the following year.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 315 series is regularly used on Chuo Main Line between Nagoya and Nakatsugawa (including through-service to Aichi Loop Line as far as Setoguchi), Kansai Main Line between Nagoya and Kameyama, Taketoyo Line and the entire Tokaido Main Line (i.e. between Atami and Maibara). All Chuo Line services excluding Limited Express Shinano are provided by the 315 series, while it is not common to see it on Tokaido Main Line between Nagoya and Maibara.
