History
The 311 series is a suburban EMU type, initially introduced to New Rapid and Rapid trains on Tokaido Main Line. It is based on 211 series, but the 311 series can run at 120 km/h (75 mph), slightly faster than the 211 series. The 311 series has better transverse seating than the 211 series as JR Central envisaged that this new train would attract passengers using its rival, Meitetsu trains.
At first, the 311 series trains were mainly used in Nagoya area, but soon entered services in Shizuoka area as well. However, New Rapid work was superseded by 313 series by the late-1990s. Since then, the 311 series have been used mostly for stopping services.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
At present, the 311 series are used in Nagoya area. Farewell decorations have been given to commemorate its retirement, and remaining units will be active until 30th June. A farewell tour will be held in the following month.
