History
The 311 series is a suburban EMU type, initially introduced to New Rapid and Rapid trains on Tokaido Main Line. It is based on 211 series, but the 311 series can run at 120 km/h (75 mph), slightly faster than the 211 series.
At first, the 311 series trains were mainly used in Nagoya area, but soon entered services in Shizuoka area as well. However, New Rapid works were superseded by 313 series, even faster trains, by the late-1990s.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
At present, the 311 series are used in Nagoya area. The trains usually run Tokaido Main Line including services to and from Taketoyo Line, but there is no regular service on Chuo Main Line. JR Central is going to replace the 311 series with brand new 315 series by 2026, but could be even before that.
