History

The 9000 series was introduced to the Namboku Line when it was opened. It was based on 05 series of the Tozai Line, but the 9000 series has been compatible with driver-only operation and automatic train operation system since the very beginning. The 9000 series trains are officially classified into five groups, as they have different equipment like inverters for voltage control. However, the first four groups do not look different. Each unit consisted of four coaches at first, but later became six and even eight.

The 9000 series trains have been used for through-services towards the Tokyu Meguro Line and the Saitama Railway Line. 23 six-carriage units were introduced by 2009, but Tokyo Metro has been introducing intermediate carriages since 2021, to make some units formed of eight coaches.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 9000 series is used on the Namboku Line and through-services towards the Tokyu Meguro and Saitama Railway Lines. Since 2023, it also runs the Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line but not the Sotetsu lines. 15 out of 23 units in total are going to be formed of eight coaches.
