History

The 05 series was introduced to Tozai Line to boost number of services and replace 5000 series. The 05 series can be classified into two groups, and they are hereinafter referred to as the first and second groups, respectively. Each unit initially consisted of ten coaches.

The first group was introduced in 1988-94, with 24 ten-carriage units in total. They can be classified further into several groups having different traction, but this article does not describe them in detail. Five units of them have wider doors than usual to ease congestion.

First thirteen units were replaced with 15000 series in 2010-11, but four units were refurbished, shortened to three coaches and reallocated to Chiyoda Line (Kita-ayase branch line). Eight units were exported to Indonesia.

The second group, which is also known as 05N series was introduced in 1999-2005, with 19 ten-car units in total. They have completely different equipment and exterior design as if being a different type. Unlike the first group, none of the second group have wider doors than usual ones.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

Those on Tozai Line are used for through-sevices towards JR Chuo and Sobu Lines (stopping services as far as Mitaka and Tsudanuma, respectively) and Toyo Rapid Line. The remaining units of the first group have been refurbished so that they are likely to remain until the 2030s. All units of the second group are operational as well, and they are also subject to refurbishment possibly starting in the mid-2020s.

Those on Chiyoda Line are used only between Ayase and Kita-ayase (branch line).
