History
The 8000 series was introduced by Teito Rapid Transit Authority (also known as Eidan, now Tokyo Metro) two years after the Hanzomon Line was opened. TRTA initially decided not to have its own train and borrowed Tokyu 8500 series instead, but TRTA changed its mind as the Line was extended. The 8000 series trains have been engaging in through-services towards the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line from the very beginning, and also to the Tobu Lines since 2003. Withdrawal commenced in 2021 following the introduction of 18000 series, and Tokyo Metro initially planned to replace all 8000 series by financial year 2022, but deferrred for three years.
It is not well known that the 8000 series trains were also used on the Tozai Line in 1987-89 with purple bands.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 8000 series run Tokyo Metro the Hanzomon Line, the Tokyu Den-en-toshi, Tobu Nikko and Isesaki Lines. Tokyo Metro will replace all 8000 series trains with the 18000 series by early-2026.
