History

The 6000 series was designed for Chiyoda Line. Teito Rapid Transit Authority (also known as Eidan) adopted many latest technologies such as chopper-controlled traction and regenerative brakes.

Since the 6000 series was produced for more than 20 years, there were several subtle differences between units, but they mostly looked the same. The first unit was formed of three coaches, but all units except one eventually consisted of ten coaches. The first two units were temporarily allocated to Tozai Line, where tests were carried out. The 6000 series entered Chiyoda Line services in 1971, two years after the Line was opened.

The 6000 series was used for through-services towards Joban Line and Odakyu Line as well. Many units were dramatically refurbished, but Tokyo Metro found that introducing brand new trains would be less costly so that some 6000 series remained unchanged. They were replaced with 16000 series by 2018. 26 out of 35 ten-carriage units were exported to Indonesia, and still considerable number of them are in service.
