History
The 6500 series was developed for Toei Mita Line to boost the capacity as the Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line, which opened in March 2023, would result in an increase in demand. According to the Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation, both the exterior and interior design were carefully made to be functional, and they hoped that the train would be "loved by people for a long time". However, its appearance is sometimes said to be too functional, or rather, less attractive than any other trains in the capital. The front end of the 6500 series was described by many commuters and railway enthusiasts as a microwave oven at the time of introduction.
Unlike its predecessor 6300 series, each 6500 series unit is formed of eight coaches. The 6500 series entered service in 2022, and 13 units were introduced in total. They have also been used since 2023 for through-services to the Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line. However, no unit is currently compatible with safety protection systems on Sotetsu tracks, and thus the series cannot run beyond Shin-Yokohama.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 6500 series is used on the Toei Mita Line including through-services towards Hiyoshi on the Tokyu Meguro Line and Shin-Yokohama on the Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line. Since the 6500 series is formed of eight coaches while 6300 series is formed of six, both series have been used separately and thus their schedules are fixed. The Bureau will introduce eleven more units in 2027-29 to replace the 6300 series.
