History

The 5300 series was deigned for Toei Asakusa Line of underground. The series was designed by Hitachi as an innovative, refreshing, comfortable and chic train. The 5300 series had been recognised by quite a few people as a noisy and old-fashioned train since around 2010, but it was definitely a modern train at the time of introduction.

Each unit consisted of eight coaches, and they also ran Keikyu, Keisei and Hokuso lines as a part of through-services, meaning that they could be seen frequently in Chiba and Kanagawa Prefectures as well. However, they could not run Narita Sky Access Line or as green Limited Express (Kaitoku) on Keikyu Main Line towards Yokohama due to lower maximum speed and acceleration.

Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation replaced the 5300 series with 5500 series in 2018-21, but the 5300 series remained operational a little longer than anticipated as a minor change on communication devices of the 5500 series was carried out. The last unit of the 5300 series retired silently in 2023.
