History
The 80000 series is a type of commuter train for Tobu Noda Line, also known as Urban Park Line. Unlike its prefecessor 60000 series, each 80000 series unit is formed of five coaches instead of six, as the company predicts that the ridership declined during the COVID-19 pandemic will not fully recover.
Tobu Noda Line had been notorious for having obsolete trains, but the 80000 series was developed with the latest systems, especially energy-saving motors and other devices. It is also compatible with driver-only operation, which is expected to be introduced after 2026. Each unit has a priority seat on coach 4 that is specifically designed for children and parents with a pushchair.
The company plans to introduce 25 five-carriage units in total to replace all 8000 series and 10000 series (10030 subseries) trains, but 18 of them will have an intermediate carriage of the 60000 series, to reduce costs and reuse the existing carriages.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 80000 series is used on Noda Line. 107 carriages in total (excluding those converted from the 60000 series) will be delivered by financial year 2028.
