History

The 20000 series was designed for through-services towards Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line. The carriages are slightly shorter than other Tobu rolling stock because of loading gauge of Hibiya Line. 24 eight-carriage units were introduced in total, and eight of them had some coaches with five sets of doors, to ease congestion (20050 subseries).

The 20000 series trains had been used on stopping services on Tobu Nikko, Isesaki and Tokyo Metro Hibiya Lines between Minami-kurihashi and Naka-meguro, but they were replaced with 70000 series in 2017-20. Many units have been shortened to four coaches, dramatically converted and reallocated to stopping services in rural areas (20400 subseries). Furthermore, several units were resold to Alpico in Nagano Prefecture, which are renamed 20100 series.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 20000 series (20400 subseries) are used on Tobu Nikko Line between Minami-kurihashi and Tobu-nikko, the entire Kinugawa and Tobu Utsunomiya Lines. Most services provided by them are driver-only operation.

Alpico 20100 series entered service in 2022, and four two-carriage units in total are due to be delivered to Kamikochi Line by 2025, replacing all 3000 series.
