History

The 1000 series is the first rolling stock for Shizuoka Railway to have stainless-steel body. Its design is based on Tokyu 7200 series, though the front end does not look similar to it. 12 two-carriage units were introduced to Shizuoka Shimizu Line in total. Like other small private railways, most 1000 series units have been wearing various advertisements. The eleventh unit has been painted pink with Chibi Maruko-chan cartoons since 2015, as Shizuoka was author's hometown.

The 1000 series has been gradually replaced with A3000 series since 2016. Echizen Railway in Fukui Prefecture and Kumamoto Electric Railway purchased a unit in 2021.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

Shizuoka Railway plans to withdraw all 1000 series units in 2023. Kumamoto Electric Railway has been using it on the entire network since 2022, but not every day. Echizen Railway calls it MC 8000 series and uses it on Katsuyama Eiheiji Line.
