History

The 7000 series was the third Romancecar train type, often abbreviated as LSE. Four eleven-carriage units were introduced, but like many other Romancecar units, each carriage was shorter than ordinary railway carriage. The length of an LSE unit was almost equivalent to that of seven-car commuter train. The LSE was the last train painted in orange and grey, the traditional Romancecar livery. The LSE had several new features, such as automatic folding doors, reclining and automatically-rotating seating.

Since the introduction, the LSE had mainly been used for Limited Express services between Shinjuku and Hakone-Yumoto. In 1982, a unit was used for testing on Tokaido Main Line. It was unprecedented that Japanese National Railways borrowed private railway's train for an experiment.

Withdrawal commenced in 2010, but the LSE remained mainline longer than its successors 10000 series HiSE and 20000 series RSE. The last rail tour of the LSE was held in 2018.

They were painted like the 10000 series HiSE when refurbished, but later restored to orange and grey.
