History

The 5820 series is a part of Series 21 trains with convertible seating (longitudinal to transverse and vice versa). There are other types that look almost the same as the 5820 series, but those trains have no convertible seating nor toilet (see also 9020 series).

Each 5820 series unit is formed of six coaches and can also used for through-services towards Hanshin lines. All units can join to other trains as their braking systems are compatible with those of older trains.

Since all units have an accessible toilet, they are mostly used for long-distance commuter trains. In addition, they are sometimes used for chartered services.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 5820 series is used for various commuter trains on Kashihara, Kyoto, Namba, Nara, Osaka, Tenri, Toba and Yamada Lines, as well as through-services to Hanshin lines. The series can be formed of up to 10 coaches together with other trains.
