History

The 3400 series was built with traction equipment and underframe of the first AE series Skyliner (1973-93) to minimise the cost as much as possible. Its body is similar to that of 3700 series, but the 3400 is made of steel while the 3700 is made of stainless steel. Five eight-carriage units were delivered in total, but it is not well known that they were formed of six coaches in their first few months.

The 3400 series is designed to be compatible with underground train standards so that it has been operated on Toei Asakusa Line as well as Keikyu Lines and Hokuso Line. However, it cannot run Narita Sky Access Line. Withdrawal commenced in 2020, and four out of five units have already been sent for scrap.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 3400 series train run Keisei Main Line and sometimes Keisei Oshiage and Toei Asakusa Lines. It also runs Keikyu Lines (as far as Haneda Airport), but not often in these days.

As its traction equipment is more than 45 years old so that the last unit is likely to retire within a year or two.
