History

There are several wagon units converted from 1000 series (Ⅰ). There are DeTo 11-12, DeTo 15-16 and DeTo 17-18. Until 2011, there were also KuTo 1 and KuTo 2.

The DeTo 11-12 is for carrying train components. The DeTo 15-16 and 17-18 were designed for track replacement work, but converted again in 2003 and 2006 to emergency engineering stock. Unlike the other two units, the DeTo 11-12 has small rooms and doors just behind the cabs. All DeTo units can join to 1500 series and newer trains.

KuTo 1 and 2 were single cars for emergency engineering work. They were not powered so that two or four-carriage unit of the 1000 series was necessary to run mainline. They were scrapped as the 1000 series retired. Newer trains were not compatible with KuTo cars.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The DeTo 11-12 runs on Mondays and Thursdays (except holidays) between Kanagawa-shimmachi and Kurihama maintenance depot, carrying train components such as wheels, chairs and motors. The DeTo 15-16 and 17-18 are emergency engineering stock so that they generally stay at depots.

Photos

The DeTo 15-16 as an alternative cab unit for 2100 series, as the 2100 series unit was severely damaged by an accident.

The DeTo 15-16 usually runs every three months because of maintenance work, but this DeTo 17-18 runs less than once a year on average.
