History
The 1100 series was converted from Keio 5000 series which was operational in 1963-96. Kotoden purchased eight carriages and rearranged to four two-car units, renamed them 1100 series and introduced to Kotohira Line. Since the 1100 series were air-conditioned, they contributed to modernisation of Kotohira Line services.
There are still several ex-Keio 5000 series trains in Japan such as Fujikyu 1000 series and Iyotetsu 700 series.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
All 1100 series units are used on Kotohira Line. The company plans to replace old trains including the 1100 series with new rolling stock in the late-2020s as subsidies by local governments have been approved by their assemblies.
