History

The 6000 series was the first Keio train to have 20-metre-long (65.6-ft-long) carriage with four sets of doors. Furthermore, it was the first train for through-services towards Toei Shinjuku Line. As each carriage was larger than before, the capacity of a six-carriage unit of the 6000 series was equivalent to that of a seven-car unit of older trains. The 6000 series was initially used mainly dor express services, and entered the underground since 1980. Those introduced in 1991 had five pairs of door per carriage to ease congestion during morning peak hours.

The 6000 series trains were used on the entire Keio network except Inokashira Line, formed of up to ten coaches. However, withdrawal commenced in 1998, and some five-door units were converted to four-door. All through-services towards Toei Shinjuku Line were replaced with 9000 series in 2009. They were withdrawn from all regular service two years later.

However, a three-car unit survived for five more years. It was converted to a measurement train in 2004 and called DeWa 600 series. It was also used for engineering work such as track replacement. It was scrapped in 2016 after a brand new DeWa 900 series was introduced.
