History
The 5000 series was introduced to Keio Liner, a new all-reserved limited express services for commuters on weekdays and tourists at the weekend. All carriages have convertible seating, (longitudinal and transverse), and four out of ten units have reclining seats. Each unit has several batteries, and can run at low speed in case of power outage. The series can also run the Toei Shinjuku Line.
Ten ten-car units were introduced in total, replacing a few 7000 series units.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 5000 series is used on the entire Keio lines except the Inokashira and Dobutuen Lines. Keio Liner services (including Mt. Takao at the weekend) are exclusively served by the 5000 series. They are also used for seasonal trains towards Takaosanguchi, as well as towards the Tokyo Racecourse in Fuchu. However, they are seldom used for through-services towards the Toei Shinjuku Line.
