History
MoBo 21 series was introduced in 1994 in commemoration of the 1200th anniversary of establishment of Heian-kyo. In 794, Emperor Kanmu established it as the capital of Japan, and his descendants lived in Kyoto until 1868 when the capital was officially moved to Tokyo.
The MoBo 21 series is based on MoBo 621 series, but the exterior design looks like trams in the early-20th century. Keifuku has been repainting its rolling stock purple since 2010, but neither MoBo 21 series cars have been repainted so far.
