History
The 3000 series is the latest rolling stock of Hakone Tozan Railway, and each carriage is double-ended. It is the first train on Hakone Tozan Line with inverter-controlled traction. There are transverse seats with large windows, allowing passengers to enjoy the scenery. The series was introduced to make all trains three coaches with 2000 series St. Moritz to ease congestion, as number of foreign tourists dramatically increased.
In 2017, the company introduced a two-carriage unit (3100 series), replacing extremely old trains. More were delivered in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
There are four 3000 series cars and two two-car units of the 3100 series. The 3000 series is always joined to the 2000 or 3100 series to form three coaches, but there is no regular service consisted of two or three 3000 series cars. The 3100 series is also used without any 3000 series car.
