History
The 9000 series, initially called 2000 series, was built in 1983, months before Chiba Newtown Line of Housing and Urban Development Corporation (hereinafter referred to as HUDC) between Komuro and Chiba Newtown Chuo was opened. Though they were owned by HUDC, Hokuso Railway operated and maintained them.
There were two units and formed of six coaches at first, and used on Hokuso and Chiba Newtown Lines as well as through-services to Matsudo on Shin-Keisei Line (which was discontinued in 1992). Both units became eight-carriage units in 1990 with new intermediate carriages were delivered. They were renumbered from 2000 to 9000 series after through-services towards Keisei, Toei Asakusa and Keikyu lines commenced, as Keikyu also had 2000 series.
When HUDC was reorganised to Urban Renaissance Agency in 2004, a new company Chiba Newtown Railway was established, and they succeeded all rolling stock, tracks and other facilities, but the 9000 series had still been managed by Hokuso. The first unit was replaced with 9200 series in 2013, and the second unit was replaced with 9800 series in 2017.
