History
The 20 series was introduced when the number of passengers started to gradually increase since 2000. Due to financial difficulties, the company had not been investing in rolling stock so that there were still trains without air-conditioning. Enoden decided to replace those obsolete trainsets with the 20 series.
However, to reduce costs, Enoden did not design them from the ground up. Bodies were based on 10 series, and traction, bogies, motors and braking systems were reused from those of 500 series (in service: 1956-2003).
Current Operations & Future Prospects
Two units of the 20 series have been used on the entire line. The first unit is often designated for rail tours, though rarely in these days.
