History
The 1500 series is a type of suburban diesel train for Tokushima Prefecture, replacing all KiHa 58 series and some KiHa 40 series. The 1500 series is eco-friendly and accessible for phisically-challenged passengers. It is double-ended and compatible with driver-only operation. The 1500 series can be coupled with the 1000 series (1200 series). According to the company, the introdution of the new diesel train dramatically reduced CO2 and other toxic fumes.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 1500 series trains are used for stopping services on Kotoku, Mugi, Naruto and Tokushima Lines. Until 2020, they were also used between Takamatsu and Kotohira on Yosan and Dosan Lines when Limited Express Sunrise Seto was extended to Kotohira at peak seasons, as there was a fear of electricity shortage.
