History
The 1000 series is a type of suburban diesel train, developed for stopping services in Kochi and Tokushima Prefectures. Unlike its predecessors, the 1000 series is double-ended and compatible with driver-only operation. Many diesel trains of ex-Japanese National Railways at that time had no air conditioning, but the 1000 series has more powerful engine both for running and providing electricity inside the train.
In 2006-08, 18 carriages in Tokushima were converted to be able to couple with 1500 series, by replacing couplers, refurbishing a little and repainting green. They are called 1200 series today.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 1000 and 1200 series are used on Dosan, Kotoku, Mugi, Naruto and Tokushima Lines. Those in Kochi area are also used for through-services towards Gomen-Nahari Line of Tosa Kuroshio Railway. The 1200 series are used on Takamatsu and Tokushima areas. When Limited Express Sunrise Seto is extended to Kotohira at peak seasons, the 1000 series is used for a few stopping services between Tadotsu and Kotohira instead of EMUs due to electricity shortage.
At least 28 out of 56 carriages are due to be replaced by brand new trains by around 2031.
