History
303 series is a type of commuter train, introduced when Chikuhi Line between Shimoyamato and Chikuzen-Maebaru became double-track. Each unit is formed of six coaches, and all three units are compatible with driver-only operation. The series is compatible with underground tunnels as it is for through-service towards Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line.
The 303 series is based on 815 series, but the 303 series is for DC 1.5 kV electricity. In fact, the 303 series is the first train compatible with DC power that JR Kyushu developed.
The 303 series also runs the rural part of Chikuhi Line (i.e. a longer journey with fewer services than near the city centre of Fukuoka) so that an accessible toilet was installed to each unit in 2003.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 303 series runs between Fukuoka Airport and Nishi-Karatsu, but mostly between the airport and Chikuzen-Maebaru. Major overhauls and repair works are carried out at Meinohama Depot of the Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau, not Kokura maintenance depot of JR Kyushu.
