History

815 series is a suburban train for the Kumamoto and Oita areas, which was initially introduced to the Hohi Main Line when part of it was electrified in 1999. The series is the first A-train, a brand of Hitachi trains that subsequently adopted by not only train operators across Japan but also other countries, notably the United Kingdom.

The 815 series is for regional services near large cities, where trains are congested during rush hours but nearly empty at off-peak times. That is why, its seating is longitudinal as if being a commuter train, but at the same time each unit is formed of just two coaches and all of them are compatible with driver-only operation.

26 two-carriage units were introduced in total, not just the Hohi Main Line but also the Kagoshima Main Line in the Kumamoto area, as well as the Nippo Main Line in the Oita area. The 815 series replaced 423 series (in service: 1965-2001) and 457/475 series, resulting in far more comfortable, reliable and environmentally friendly services.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

Those allocated to Kumamoto are mostly used for the Hohi Main Line between Kumamoto and Higo-Otsu as well as the Kagoshima Main Line between Tosu and Yatsushiro via Kumamoto. A few services, mostly in the early morning and late at night, run as far as Hakata.

Others allocated to Oita are used on the Nippo Main Line between Nakatsu and Saiki via Oita, with a few extended to Shigeoka.
