History
The 4000 series was introduced to Blue Line, replacing 3000A series. Yokohama City Transportation Bureau initially planned to order more 3000V series, but it later decided to change exterior design so that a new type has been registered. Its front end resembles Kobe City Subway 6000 series.
The 4000 series is even more accessible than its predecessors. There are designated spaces on every coach for wheelchairs and prams, and there is almost no gap between a train and a platform. Some displays above doors are connected to an emergency battery that allows the screens to show information even in case of power outage.
Each trainset is formed of six coaches and the first unit entered service in 2022.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 4000 series is used on the entire Blue Line. The Bureau also plans to introduce more in 2027-31 to replace 3000N and 3000S series.
