History

The 02 series was introduced by Teito Rapid Transit Authority (TRTA, also known as Eidan) to Marunouchi Line. It is largely based on 01 series for Ginza Line. 53 six-carriage units (for main line) and six three-car units (for branch line) were built. Those introduced in the first two years had no air-conditioning, but soon installed.

Tokyo Metro has refurbished considerable number of trainsets (19 six-car units) in 2009-13, but later realised that replacing them with brand new trains would cost less. Withdrawal commenced in 2018 as the 02 series is not compatible with new signalling system, which is due to be installed in mid-2020s. All three-car units for Honancho branch line were withdrawn in 2022.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

All Marunouchi Line services will be provided by 2000 series by 2023, meaning that the 02 series will retire by then.
