History

The 1000 series looks almost the same as 9000 series, but they are slightly different. A carriage of the 1000 series is shorter than that of the 9000 series, and thus has only three sets of doors. Motors and traction are also different. Eight eight-carriage units were introduced to Toyoko Line, four four-car units to then-Mekama Line and 11 three-car units to Ikegami Line. Eight-car units were designed for through-services to Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, and four-car units could form eight coaches and run Toyoko Line.

Those on Mekama Line became three-car units and reallocated to Ikegami and Tokyu Tamagawa Lines, when Mekama Line was rearranged to Meguro and Tamagawa Lines in 2000. Eight-car units were taken out of Toyoko Line services by 2013 when the through-services to Hibiya Line were discontinued. Some of them were converted to three coaches, refurbished and reallocated to, again, Ikegami and Tamagawa Lines (1500 subseries). In addition, many redundant carriages were resold to small private railways, most of which are Tokyu's subsidiaries.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 1000 series are used for Tokyu Tamagawa and Ikegami Lines. They are all formed of three coaches now, and seven out of sixteen units are the original style, while nine of them are the 1500 subseries.

Fukushima Transportation, Uedadentetsu (Nagano Prefecture), Iga Tetsudo (Mie Prefecture) and Ichibata Electric Railway (Shimane Prefecture) also use some 1000 series on their networks.

Very few had centre gangway that allow a four-car unit to form eight coaches with another one. Only one unit remains today.

It has been painted green, just like its predecessors (which retired in the 1980s).
