History

The 8500 series was the first tram for Arakawa Line in 28 years. It was also the first tram of Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation for having inverter-controlled traction. Wider doors than other trams contributed to smooth boarding and alighting. The Bureau planned to replace all trams on Arakawa Line with the 8500 series, but gave up because of lack of funding.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

There are five 8500 series on Arakawa Line. Most of them are covered with wrap advertisements (some of which are disturbingly vivid) so that it is not easy to see the original style.
