History
The TX-1000 series is one of two types introduced to Tsukuba Express alongside TX-2000 series, but the 1000 series is compatible only with DC 1.5 kV power. Metropolitan Intercity Railway considered that dual-voltage trains are so costly that cheaper trains were necessary. 14 six-carriage units were introduced in total, and all carriages have longitudinal seating.
The 1000 series looks almost identical to the 2000 series, but the 1000 series has dark-blue number plates below a cab and next to a door. Pantograph position and other equipment on a roof are also slightly different.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The TX-1000 series is mainly used for stopping services between Akihabara and Moriya. It cannot run beyond Moriya where AC 20 kV power is supplied. The MIR plans to make some trains formed of eight coaches in the early-2030s amid an increase in demand, but it is not clear if the 1000 series is also subject to the rearrangement.
