History
The 10 series is the very first underground train in Kyoto and it was introduced when Karasuma Line opened. Each unit was initially formed of four coaches, but became six when the line was extended to Takeda in 1988. More units were delivered as the line was gradually extended to Kitayama and then Kokusaikaikan in 1997, and 20 six-carriage units in total entered service.
There are some differences between those introduced in 1980-81 and others after 1988. The most characteristic feature is a centre gangway: that of the former group has no window while the latter has one. Window frames between doors are also different.
Kyoto Municipal Transportation Bureau commenced through-services towards Kintetsu Kyoto Line in 1988, and the 10 series has been used for them since then. In 2000, Kintetsu launched express services between Kokusaikaikan on Karasuma Line and Kintetsu-Nara.
Units introduced after 1988 were refurbished in 2014-20 with completely new traction, motors and braking system, and the Bureau envisages fully automatic operation on Karasuma Line.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 10 series is used on Karasuma Line including through-services to Kintetsu Kyoto Line. The units introduced in 1980-81 are due to be replaced with 20 series by financial year 2025.
