History
This article is about the following types of trains: 8810, 9000 and 9200 series.
The 8810 series group was designed for Nara Line, and was developed as one of environmentally friendly trains as energy cost was a matter of concern amid the oil crisis. The 8810 series was designed mainly for Nara Line services, but some units were later reallocated to other areas. The trains were initially painted maroon only, but they were repainted maroon and white by the late-1980s.
The 8810 series was introduced in 1981-84 with eight four-carriage units in total.
The 9000 series is formed of two coaches, and eight two-car units entered service in 1983-84. All units had been used on Nara Line at first, but they were reallocated to Nagoya area by 2007. More than half of them are compativle with driver-only operation so that they are often used for stopping services on Shima Line.
The 9200 series was the three-car version of the 8810 series at the time of introduction in 1983, but an intermediate carriage was inserted to all units in 1991, and thus four four-carriage units were effectively built.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 8810 series family is widely used on Nagoya, Namba, Nara and Osaka Lines, and they often join to other trains. Services on Shima Line are driver-only operation.
