History
26000 series Sakura Liner was introduced to enhance service quality of limited express trains on Minami Osaka and Yoshino Lines. Though accommodation and squat toilets were apparently old-fashioned even at the time of introduction, the series contributed to make services attractive as they were far better than those of 16000 series. Traction, motors and braking systems are based on those of 21000 series Urban Liner.
Two units were introduced and each of them is formed of four coaches. They were painted white with green stripes at first, but repainted pink when refurbished. The refurbishment took place in 2011, replacing all outdated features such as seating and squat toilets. One of four coaches per unit was converted to Deluxe Car (first class coach).
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 26000 series is used for Limited Express Sakura Liner (Osaka-Abenobashi - Yoshino), and a few services are formed of eight coaches (using both units).
