History

23000 series Ise-shima Liner was introduced when Shima Spain Village, a complex consists of an amusement park, hotels and hot springs, opened. The Village was developed by Kintetsu as well, and the company concluded that there should be a brand new train specifically designed for tourists. According to designers, the series was modelled after AVE Renfe Class 100 in Spain.

The shape of the front end is somewhat similar to 21000 series Urban Liner, but motors and traction are based on those of 22000 series ACE. Each unit is formed of six coaches, and there are not only Regular Cars (standard class coaches) and a Deluxe Car (first class coach) but also Saron Car (compartments).

All six units were painted yellow and white at first, but half of them were repainted red and yellow when refurbished in 2012-13.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The 23000 series is mainly used for limited express between Nagoya, Kyoto or Osaka-Namba and Kashikojima. In addition, there are a few limited express services between Kyoto and Kashiharajingu-mae, as well as those between Osaka-Namba and Nara.
