History
This article is about 22600 series and 16600 series. They are essentially the same except track gauges: the 22600 series is 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1/2 in), while the 16600 series is 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in).
The 22600 series group was developed on the basis of 22000 series, and that is why they are difficult to distinguish them (unless you are a passionate Kintetsu enthusiast). The 22600 series slightly looks different from the 22000 series such as a window in the middle of centre gangway at the front end and the position of lights below the cab. Their traction and braking systems are different as well.
The 22600 series was designed for "general purposes", meaning various limited express on the entire network with a few exceptions. 12 two-carriage units and two four-car units were introduced in total. Some units were later converted to be compatible with through-services to Hanshin lines.
The 16600 series is for Minami Osaka and Yoshino Lines, and two two-car units were built in total. Since there is no steep gradients and no need to run at high speed, the power output of the 16600 series is lower than that of the 22600 series.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 22600 series is used for various limited express services, so suffice it to say that it can be frequently seen in Ise, Kyoto, Nagoya, Nara and Osaka areas. The series can run Hanshin lines, but the through-service is limited to a few seasonal and chartered trains.
The 16600 series has been used for limited express between Osaka-Abenobashi and Yoshino.
