History
The 21020 series Urban Liner Next was introduced in 2002 when 21000 series Urban Liner was taken out of service whilst they were being refurbished. Kintetsu employees considered that a brand new trains were necessary, as using older rolling stock (e.g. 12200 series New Snack Car) instead would damage reputation of the company. Two six-carriage units were built in total, and they entered limited express services between Namba and Nagoya in 2003.
The 21020 series looks similar to the 21000 series, but the 21020 series is far more environmentally friendly as there is inverter-controlled traction and regenerative brakes.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 21020 series is mostly used for following limited express services (all of which call at many stations): those between Osaka-Namba and Kintetsu-Nagoya, between Osaka-Namba and Kashikojima and between Kintetsu-Nagoya and Kashikojima.
