History

This article is about the following types of trains: 1422, 1430, 1435, 1436, 1437, 1440 and 1620 series.

The 1422 series group looks very similar to 1220 series group, but manufucturers of traction and gears are different. The 1422 series was initially called 1250 series but renumbered in 1990 following the introduction of 1230 series, suggesting that Kintetsu staffs have been confused with the extremely complicated numbering methods. Six two-carriage units were entered service in 1987.

The 1430 series, which can be classified further into 1435, 1436, 1437 and 1440 series, is almost identical to the 1422 series but with minor differences. These de facto subseries have even subtler changes such as braking systems and driver-only operation features. 15 two-car units were introduced in 1990-98.

The 1620 was introduced in 1994-96 with five four-car and a six-car units in total. Unlike the other two series, the 1620 series have no toilet and thus cannot be used for long-distance services.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

They are used for various commuter trains (from Rapid Express to stopping services) like the 1220 series group. Refurbishment has been carried out gradually since 2023.
